More About Me!

What made you want to volunteer with SJPC?

I got involved with SJPC through SURJ (Showing Up For Racial Justice) Sacramento! SJPC had reached out to SURJ looking for folx to take notes at local government meetings, so that SJPC could then use those notes to write pieces for their bimonthly newsletter. At that time I had only lived in Sacramento for about 6 months, and I was eager to jump in and start learning more about local politics. The idea of increasing government transparency and accountability while advocating for socially just policies really intrigued me. I had never been involved in local politics, and SJPC seemed like the perfect place to plug in.

How does it feel to be the first paid full-time staff member at SJPC?

Honestly I mostly just feel lucky! The timing of being offered this position aligned with a time in my life where my career felt a little chaotic and unfocused, and the chance to dedicate all my work time to SJPC felt like a blessing. Working at SJPC feels natural, since I had been volunteering here for about a year before I was hired. Being able to focus all my energy on the work I do for SJPC is not only personally gratifying, but I feel like I am making some amount of difference in the community. Overall I'm just grateful to have this opportunity, and I hope good will come out of me being here!

What are you dreams for SJPC?

I think my ultimate dream for SJPC is for us to be a hub for political information in Sacramento County - I hope that we will become so established in the community that we will be the organization that people turn to when they need support, guidance, or simply need to share what's been happening in their community. A really big dream would be for us to expand to other counties! I think we are developing a really great model that could be effectively utilized by any organization seeking to increase the transparency and accountability of their local governments.
